China Vows to Cut Energy, Carbon Intensity By 2015

For the first time, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has announced goals for reduction in the carbon intensity of China’s economic growth, stating a target of 16 to 17 percent reductions from this year to the end of 2015.  This target appears in the new five-year development plan which will contribute to the attainment of China’s pledge to cut carbon intensity by 40 to 45 percent by 2020.  This target, lower than some had hoped, is set to be approved by parliament soon along with a pledge to increase the proportion of non-fossil fuels in overall primary energy use to 15 percent by 2020.
